In a major embarrassment to the Andhra Pradesh government, the State Human Rights Commission has held it responsible for the murder of Julakunti Srinivas Reddy alias Muddu Seenu, who was killed in the Anantapur jail last week, and ordered the government to pay compensation of Rs five lakh to his widow. APHRC chairman Justice B Subhashan Reddy passed the landmark order after the Director General of Police Lokendar Sharma admitted that the jail staff had been negligent.
Directing Andhra Pradesh government to conduct a magisterial enquiry into the killing of 20 persons allegedly in police firing in Chittoor district, the National Human Rights Commission on Monday ordered the Tamil Nadu police to give protection to two persons from the state connected with the incident.
It may be recalled that seven persons were killed and seven others injured in the police firing while several policemen were injured in stone-pelting, including a constable who suffered an injury in his left eye and lost vision.
